The Future of the USMNT Coaching Position

Jesse Marsch, the current coach of the Canadian national team, has made it clear that he has no interest in replacing Gregg Berhalter as the head coach of the USMNT. Despite being a former candidate for the position, Marsch stated in a news conference that he is content with his role with Canada and does not see himself pursuing the USMNT job in the future. This decision comes after the disappointing performance of the USMNT at the 2024 Copa América, which led to Berhalter’s dismissal.

As an American coach who previously managed Leeds United in the Premier League, Marsch was considered a frontrunner for the USMNT coaching position when Berhalter’s contract expired in 2022. However, after being overlooked for the role, Marsch took on the job with the Canadian national team in May. Marsch has been critical of U.S. Soccer’s handling of the coaching selection process, citing that he was not treated well during the evaluation period. Despite his past grievances, Marsch is focused on his current role with Canada and has no intention of pursuing the USMNT job in the future.

Another reported candidate to replace Berhalter, LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo, has been less forthcoming about his interest in the USMNT role. Cherundolo, a former U.S. national team player, led LAFC to consecutive MLS Cup finals and a Concacaf Champions Cup final in his first two years as coach. When questioned about his potential candidacy for the USMNT job, Cherundolo remained non-committal, emphasizing his commitment to LAFC and deflecting speculation about his future plans. Despite being a potential candidate, Cherundolo has chosen to focus on his current responsibilities with LAFC and has refrained from discussing the possibility of coaching the USMNT.

In the wake of Berhalter’s departure, reports have surfaced that U.S. Soccer has reached out to former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp as a potential candidate for the USMNT coaching position. However, sources indicate that it is highly unlikely that Klopp will entertain further discussions with U.S. Soccer. While the pursuit of a high-profile manager like Klopp may seem ambitious, the reality is that securing a coach of his caliber may be a difficult task for U.S. Soccer.

Overall, the future of the USMNT coaching position remains uncertain, with potential candidates like Jesse Marsch and Steve Cherundolo expressing different levels of interest in the role. As U.S. Soccer continues its search for a new head coach, the organization faces the challenge of finding the right candidate to lead the national team to success on the international stage.
