The Detroit Lions Honor Calvin Johnson

The Detroit Lions recently announced that they will be adding Calvin Johnson to the team’s Pride of the Lions, signifying a significant step in repairing their relationship with the Hall of Fame wide receiver. This move comes after a period of tension between Johnson and the Lions, specifically when the team requested Johnson to repay $1.6 million of his signing bonus upon his retirement in 2015. However, the Lions have taken strides to mend ties with Johnson in recent years.

Mike Disner, the Lions‘ chief operating officer, surprised Johnson during his charity golf tournament with the announcement of his inclusion in the Pride of the Lions. Johnson expressed his gratitude towards the team, labeling the unexpected announcement as a „tearjerker“. He mentioned on the „Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams“ that being celebrated by his peers and the city of Detroit was a tremendous honor for him.

Calvin Johnson, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021, holds several records for the Lions franchise. With the most career receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown catches in team history, Johnson’s impact on the field was undeniable. Moreover, his single-season receiving yards record of 1,964 in 2012 still stands as an impressive feat in the NFL.

Lions president and CEO Rod Wood lauded Johnson’s contributions to the team and the city of Detroit, calling the addition of Johnson to the Pride of the Lions a well-deserved honor. Wood emphasized Johnson’s legendary commitment and expressed pride in immortalizing him within Ford Field and as a Detroit Lion. Johnson will be joining a prestigious group of former Lions players as the 21st recipient of this esteemed honor.

The Pride of the Lions was established in 2009 as a permanent display at Ford Field to pay tribute to the finest players in the history of the franchise. Calvin Johnson’s induction into this elite group further solidifies his legacy and cements his place among the greats who have donned the Honolulu Blue and Silver.
