Evgeny Kuznetsov Signs Four-Year Contract with SKA Saint Petersburg

Former Carolina Hurricanes center Evgeny Kuznetsov has made the decision to return to Russia to continue his hockey career by signing a four-year contract with SKA Saint Petersburg in the Kontinental Hockey League. This move comes after Kuznetsov’s contract with the Hurricanes was mutually terminated two weeks ago, following his clearance from unconditional waivers. Despite walking away from a substantial $6 million salary owed to him in the final season of his $64.2 million seven-year deal signed back in 2017, Kuznetsov is ready to embark on this new chapter in his career.

Kuznetsov’s time with the Hurricanes was marked by a mix of highs and lows. While he showcased his skills as the leading scorer and Conn Smythe runner-up during the Capitals‘ 2018 Stanley Cup victory, his performance has been inconsistent in recent years. In the 2023-24 regular season and playoffs, Kuznetsov managed just 13 points in 30 games in a limited role with the Hurricanes, who made it to the second round. Additionally, the NHL suspended Kuznetsov for three games in September 2019 due to „inappropriate conduct“ and he was also banned from playing for Russia for four years following a positive test for cocaine.

In light of these incidents, Kuznetsov voluntarily entered the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program in February, seeking help and support for any off-ice issues he may be facing. After being cleared to resume practice by program administrators, the Capitals made the decision to place him on waivers, ultimately leading to his departure from Carolina and return to Russia to join SKA Saint Petersburg.

As Kuznetsov begins this new chapter with SKA Saint Petersburg, the Russian forward will have the opportunity to rebuild his career and reputation in familiar surroundings. With a fresh start in the KHL, Kuznetsov can focus on his performance on the ice and put past controversies behind him. While his time in the NHL may have been turbulent, this move could potentially provide Kuznetsov with the chance for redemption and a return to form as a top-tier player in the Russian hockey scene.
