The Chicago Cubs Make a Tough Decision with Yan Gomes

The Chicago Cubs made a difficult announcement on Wednesday, revealing that veteran catcher Yan Gomes has been designated for assignment. Gomes, who has had a 13-year career in the MLB, was playing on a $6 million option in his third season with the Cubs. However, his performance on the field has been subpar, hitting a career-low .154 with only 2 home runs and 7 RBIs.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell shared his thoughts on the decision, expressing that it was a tough one to make. He acknowledged Gomes‘ contributions as a great teammate and an important presence in the clubhouse. Despite this, the team ultimately decided that they needed to seek better production from the catching position.

Replacing Gomes on the roster is Tomas Nido, who recently joined the Cubs after being released from the New York Mets. Nido had been struggling offensively, hitting just .125 this season without any extra-base hits at the time of his release. Nido expressed his excitement about joining the Cubs and his commitment to helping the team succeed.

With Gomes out, Miguel Amaya has been getting the majority of starts at catcher for the Cubs. Amaya, who has a batting average of .188 with 2 home runs and 14 RBIs, was the starting catcher in Wednesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants. The Cubs are placing their faith in Amaya to step up in Gomes‘ absence.

Throughout his career, Yan Gomes has played for several teams, including the Oakland Athletics, Washington Nationals, Cleveland Guardians, and Toronto Blue Jays. With 137 career home runs to his name, Gomes also won a World Series with the Nationals in 2019. Despite his release from the Cubs, Gomes leaves behind a legacy of hard work and dedication on the field.
